Plytra
It is a sparsely built coastal settlement very close (4 km) to Papadianika in the Municipality of Monemvasia and 17 km from Molaus. In Plytra there are beaches such as “Pachia Ammos” which was awarded with a “Blue Flag”[citation pending]. Its population in 1950 was about 50 inhabitants, in 1971 83, in 1981 87 and in 2001 167.
Possible activities are hiking, walking, cycling (here is also the headquarters of the Bicycle Friends’ Loan Club “Podilatoparea”), jogging, mountain climbing, agro-tourism, sailing, fishing.
Every summer, organizations and the municipality of Monemvasia organize various events, concerts by well-known names and local bands, as well as painting exhibitions, parties on the beach, etc.[citation needed]
On Artanis beach is the first house (ruined and half-demolished) built in Plytra, by the Venetsanaki family, long before 1870, which is also confirmed by its characteristic architecture. It is noteworthy, however, that the oral tradition wants Theodoros Kolokotronis to have been accommodated there, as a close friendship connected the two families.
In addition to the boats and fishing boats of the permanent residents, the port of Plytra can also host pleasure boats. It used to be a port of call for ships of the barren line Piraeus – Gytheio – Kalamata – Patras – Corfu. In Plytra there is a customs official who simultaneously performs the duties of a port official, reporting to the Gytheio Sub-Port Authority.
Across from Plytra and before Cape Xili is the settlement of Karavostasi with traditional stone buildings. The port of Plytra is located opposite the port of Gythei, on the eastern side of the Laconian gulf in the bay of the same name, the mouth of the wider bay of Xylis. It sunk in Xyli bay (April 27, 1941) after being torpedoed by German planes during the Second World War and is located at a depth of 9 to 12 m.
